Girls Night with Mom

Tonight was girls night with my Momma!  We decided to go and have a "birthday" dinner at Houlihan's in Addison. They have great drinks, great food and a pretty nice atmosphere. We had tons of food and beers too.  We were stuffed!  Ryan and I usually see my parents once per week, but this was the first time in a while that I got to go out with just my Mom.  It was so much fun.  I can't wait to do it again soon!

PS: We had some awesome deserts, some version of a banana cream pie, a chocolate and Kahlua cake and a Snickers ice cream dome. Yum!

30 Day Challenge: Day 30

Challenge: Anything you want to post about

This was a fun month of posts. I enjoyed the challenge, although some days were a little juvenile. I looked forward to coming home each day and not having to think about what to write. I loved that a prompt was waiting for me, and I even liked most of them. I wonder what will happen in April when I don't have the challenge going on? I better start doing some exciting things with my life!

30 Day Challenge: Day 28

Challenge: Do you wish for anything at 11:11? If so, what do you wish for?

I don't wish at 11:11, so this is a boring post. Ugh.

30 Day Challenge: Day 27

Challenge: A picture of your handwriting

Calligraphy, a dying art and something that I am horrible at.  I guess since I grew up with computers, I am into typing instead of writing, as evidenced by my crappy handwriting.

A Great Day Spent with Friends

So Ryan and I started off the day having lunch with my favoritist roommate of all time, Kelsey+1 and her husband Adam.  I am calling her Kelsey+1 now since she just announced she is pregnant!  I cannot wait for little baby Casburn to arrive.  OTB was great as I got to eat my favorite Southwest Chicken Tacos and I got to see Kelsey, whom I haven't seen in way too long.  Both her and her husband are doing well, so that is always good to hear.  Seems like everyone is in baby mode!

Next up was meeting Mike, Amanda and Henry at the 2011 Texas Pinball Festival.  I wasn't too sure about this event, but Mike and Amanda went together last year, and insisted it was awesome.  They were right! For a $15 entry fee you could go and play as many of the machines as you liked for as long as you liked.  It was pretty rad, and yes, rad is the right word as they were blaring 80s music the entire time.  Anyway, it was all a little much for Henry, so we just stayed around an hour before heading to BJs.

Here are a couple of pics from the Festival:

Lucky for us it was porch weather, so we all hung out on the patio, drank beers (except Henry, of course) and had a couple of small plates.  Mike and Amanda had Crispy Artichokes and Ryan and I had Ahi Tuna Bites.  Yum!  After a couple of hours of hanging out, Amanda and Henry decided to head back to Southlake to spend time with Amanda's sister for the rest of the day.  This meant that Mike, Ryan and I could head back to the Pinball Festival!  We ended up playing a lot of the machines on 3 player.  Mike won most every time, Ryan was usually the runner up and I won a couple of the games.  After a couple more hours of playing, it was time for dinner.

Here is a pic of Henry and Ryan at BJs:

By 9pm we had arrived at Johnny B's Burgers and Shakes in Southlake.  I wasn't too keen on heading in to this place and the prices seemed a little steep, but the burgers were to die for!  Thin patties with perfectly melted cheese, lettuce, onions and thousand island dressing.  The homemade fries weren't too bad either.  I would for sure go back there!

We dropped Mike back off at Amanda's sister's house at around 9:30pm and called it a day.  And what a day it was!  I can't wait to see all our friends again soon!

30 Day Challenge: Day 25

Challenge: Would you rather date someone plain with an amazing personality or someone beautiful with a plain personality?

I would rather be with someone who is plain with an amazing personality. Lucky for me, I didn't have to worry about this question when I got married. My husband is both very attractive and has an awesome personality. I got really lucky when he asked me to be his wife!

30 Day Challenge: Day 24

Challenge: Six things that cross your mind a lot

1. My Husband (how in love I am with him)
2. My Family (how I missed them when I don't get to see them)
3. Having Children (hoping it doesn't take long once we decide to have children)
4. Weight Loss and Calorie Counts (ugh, sad but true)
5. Money (do we have enough, how can we get more)
6. Love (what does it really mean)

They are all impossible things and I usually think of them all before breakfast!

30 Day Challenge: Day 23

Challenge: A letter to someone, anyone

This is probably not the best day for this post, but here it goes.

Stay strong. Hold on for as long as you can without breaking. I know it isn't easy, but your family loves you. No matter what happens in the end it will be okay. Life could be better, but it could always be worse. No one knows what you are truly going through. No one would understand. I'm not even sure that you understand. I know you are questioning yourself. I know you are wondering if you did the right thing. I don't have the answers for you. I don't know either. All you can say is that you did what you did and you can't take it back. You have to live with the choices you have made. You have to live every day to the fullest and love everyone in every way you know how even if you feel they don't love you back; even if you know they don't love you back. Know that God knows you. He feels your pain. He knows your anguish. He has the answers to all of the questions that only time will reveal. Until then, look up, cheer up and love on. Life will meet you each day with new challenges, new highs and new lows. The promise is that God will never give you more than you can handle. So, keep praying, dreaming and living, because that is all you can do. You are loved.

Blue Moon Spring Blonde Wheat Ale

This has got to be the best beer I have ever had. I love it! The company says this: 'Blue Moon Spring Blonde Wheat Ale is an amber wheat ale brewed with exotic kieffer lime leaves and lime peel for a zesty, subtle twist. this beer captures the flavor, complexity, color and crispness of a spring ale. Garnish it with a lime to enhance the citrus flavor.' It really is an accurate description, more so than most. Also, it is brewed in Golden, CO where my in-laws live. How neat! I recommend it to all.

30 Day Challenge: Day 22

Challenge: A picture of what you wore today

Work clothes are boring. PJs are where it's at! I am wearing some pretty awesome blue plaid flannel PJ pants and a blue t-shirt. Awesome, right?!

30 Day Challenge: Day 21

Challenge: Turn ons and offs

Turn Ons
- Great laughs
- Deep blue eyes
- Innuendo
- Sarcastic wit
- Cooking acumen

Turn Offs
- Bad breath
- Geeky laughs
- No sense of humor
- Guys without shirts
- Funky teeth

What I really want to say here is that my turn ons are everything that my husband is and my turn offs are everything he's not.

30 Day Challenge: Day 20

Challenge: Concerts you have attended

The first real concert I ever attended was a Jewel concert at the Coca Cola Starplex in Dallas. I went with a friend in high school my junior year. We were in the 8th row, which was pretty neat. The opening act was a guy named Steve Poltz. I really thought I liked him and ended up buying his CD, which I still have to this day and really don't enjoy so much. I still love Jewel and think she is both a great musician and a great poet. Her book A Night Without Armor is my favorite modern poetry book. In fact, I recently picked it up again to read after I bought it almost 11 years ago. I love it!

The second concert I went to, just a week or two after the Jewel concert in 1999, was Barenaked Ladies. I immediately fell in love. They are not only an awesome band in general, but they put on a killer live show. They are incredibly funny and seemingly great guys. I guess now that Steve has been busted on drug charges and is no longer in the band may mean that they weren't all great guys. But I do have to admit that I am not a big fan of the new Barenaked Ladies 4, as without Steven, the band isn't that great.

The third concert I ever went to was for a local radio station and it was called the K104 Beat Jam.  The headliners of this event were Jagged Edge and Jaheim. Needless to say, I was the only white person at this concert, but at the time I loved this type of music. I guess I still kinda do, although I don't listen to it much as Ryan hates it. It was a really good concert actually.  We were in about the 15th row and we ended up standing on our chairs for the entire concert because everyone else was, so otherwise we would't have been able to see. I remember being out way past my curfew that night, but I don't remember getting in too much trouble.

The fourth concert that I went to was Ben Folds where he performed live with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.  The show was AMAZING!  It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, basically because he seems to be a really down to earth guy.  This makes it extremely easy to like him and his music.  He has a unique sound that can be neither matched nor beat.  Love him!

In the midst of attending these four concerts, I have been to see the Barenaked Ladies every time they were in the Dallas area.  I think that was three more times in the past 9 years. They have been here a couple of times recently, but like I said, without Steve, they aren't the same band.  I would probably go see them again though, I just think it would be a way different experience.

Also, I have been to the Dallas Symphony many, many times, but the above were the real concerts I have been to in my life.

I Spent $900, and All I Got Was This Stupid Pot

Okay, so maybe the pot isn't stupid. Ryan and I began saving stickers from Market Street to earn cookwear. We saved and saved and saved.  Over the 5 month contest, we racked up $900 in spending at the grocery store. That may not seem like much, but we were shocked that after spending so much, we were rewarded with only one pan.  One pan! We thought that since we had reached the third sticker threshold that we would receive one pot from level one, on from level two and one from level three.  Nope! We received one pan. This pan better help us to make the best damn food ever!

30 Day Challenge: Day 18

Challenge: Name the TV show you have become addicted to

Surprisingly to me I have become addicted to MASH. When I was a little girl, my older cousin Steve used to be obsessed with MASH. I always thought it was just a crappy war show that he and my grandfather liked to watch together. Then, for Christmas this past year, Ryan got the entire series on DVD. We have been watching it together late at night and I absolutely love it! The show is funny and I really like all of the characters. I am so glad Ryan introduced me to it!

30 Day Challenge: Day 17

Challenge: What do you want to be when you get older

If I had the answer to this, I would for sure be working towards it. When I was leaving high school and entering college, I thought for sure that I wanted to be in PR/Marketing. I just loved that creative type work and also working in a fast-paced environment where every day is different. Once I started taking some classes in PR though, I quickly changed my mind. I was also a double major in Sociology and loved that, so I decided to also major in Criminal Justice, just because it sounded interesting. So, there I sat after graduation, with a degree in Criminal Justice and a second major in Sociology. How did that happen?!

So, I knew that these two majors wouldn't take me where I wanted to be, so I decided to get a double masters in Health Sector Management and Business. So now, here I sit with both of those degrees working at a local non-profit in a Project Management role. Who knows where the future will take me, but I would eventually love to move into the corporate sector.

I wish I knew more than that, but this job planning stuff isn't easy. I guess I will just have to wait and see where life, and networking, takes me!

Our Sweet Daphne

Early this morning our sweet little Daphne lost her battle with what appeared to be a brain tumor.  Right after Hazel passed away, Daphne became depressed.  She had spent her whole life with Hazel. They were even cage mates at the Petco. Daphne was sick for about three weeks and last night she passed.  We miss her so much already. Daphne and Hazel were both so special.  Such little girls with such big personalities. We were lucky to have them both in our lives, even if it was only for a short time. Rest in peace little girl.

30 Day Challenge: Day 16

Challenge: If the world were to end tomorrow, what would you do with your remaining time on earth

Simple one! I would spend time with my family doing any and everything we love. To be honest, we would probably go eat at Noodle Wave, drink a ton of wine and go home to my parent's house to just sit and talk. I would love if other family could come from out of town. But with only 24 hours left, I am sure that wouldn't be a possibility, so we would probably set up a couple of computers and Skype with family and close friends, if possible. Simple and easy, and stuff I do all of the time, but time with family and friends is really all that matters to me in this world. Without them, I would be nothing.

30 Day Challenge: Day 15

Challenge: A photo of someone you fancy at the moment

The obvious choice of picture to answer this challenge would be of my husband. Everyone would have to know he is the person I "fancy" most and you can see pictures of us in the 11.21.09 and Beyond section of this blog if you're really that interested. So instead I chose this man.

This is Marc Paskin. Marc was the focus of the second episode of a new TV show called Secret Millionaire.  I "fancy" (I keep putting that word in quotes because I think it a funny way to ask this question) this man because he was shown to be so truly selfless, a quality the world sadly seems to be missing lately.  He gave of himself and his money because he realized the power of giving. He realized that so many people have so little that even the smallest things mean something to them.  He said he would give up all of his money and his billionaire lifestyle, things like car and house included, and live in the poorest part of Detroit if he could use his money to buy life prolonging options for others. Now who's to say that he would ever really do that, but he did give away $110,000 to worthy causes and needy people, so I say he's pretty awesome.

Cheers to you Marc Paskin! Hopefully other people follow your lead of selfless giving. Hopefully it changed your life as I know you changed the lives of others.

Click here to learn more about Marc through an interview he did with the San Diego Union Tribune.

Golfing at Oakmont

What a beautiful, absolutely beautiful, day for golf! Ryan and I decided last minute to see if we could get a tee time at Oakmont Country Club. Luckily one was available. It was pretty packed today because it was absolute perfect golf weather, so we ended up inviting the man behind us to join in with us.  His name was Rick and he was super nice to us. He started off by warning us that he hadn't played golf for six months so he thought he would be rusty. I thought he may be right, as the first couple of holes didn't go so well for him.  By the time we reached four, he was playing pretty well.  In fact, I think he was a bit better than Ryan and me.

Ryan shot a 114, which is not his best, and I shot a 116, which is my best so far.  After the first nine holes I was up by a stroke 56 to 57. Sadly, I couldn't hold it together on the back nine. I really have gotten a lot better.  This is the second time I have played 18 holes, as we play 9 quite a bit, and the first 18 I ever played I shot a 150.  So to improve by 34 strokes so far, is pretty good.  Hopefully Ryan and I can continue to play and I can break 110 soon!

30 Day Challenge: Day 13

Challenge: Three confessions of your choice

I love ice cream and I would eat it every day if it wouldn't make me gain 1,000lbs

I love watching trashy teenage shows even though everyone around me makes fun of me for it

There are about a million jobs that I would love to do if they paid enough, even though they are either menial or undesirable

30 Day Challenge: Day 11

Challenge: What is your favorite quote?

My two favorite things in life, other than family and friends of course, are photographs and quotes. That makes this challenge really, really difficult. If I had to pick just one it would be:

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
~ Teddy Roosevelt

Now, I totally have to pick runners up:

Live in such a way that those who know you but don't know God, will come to know God because they know you.

Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong.
~Ella Fitzgerald

Be fearful of mediocrity.
~Jonathan Ellery

Be true to your work, your word, and your friend.
~ Henry David Thoreau

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.
~ Winston Churchill

Don't be afraid of death Winnie. Be afraid of the un-lived life.
~Angus Tuck

Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.
~Cecil Beaton

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
~ Alfred Souza

30 Day Challenge: Day 9

Challenge: Pet Peeves

People that give one word answers, foot shaking, two-faced people, people who use big words they don't know the meaning of, wet feet, users and abusers, hypocracy, when people ooh and ahh over ugly babies, waiters that automatically add lemon to my water without asking. I am sure there are more things, but those are just a random few.

30 Day Challenge: Day 8

Challenge: Three things you want to say to different people

I will make these three comments without saying who they go to. To some people it may be obvious who I am talking to, but anyway, here we go...

On good days and bad you are my love and my life. You are my hope and my inspiration. You are my past, present and future. You are helping me mold myself into the woman I want to become. I know that my life wouldn't have been the same had I not met you. Who else would put up with me? How did I get so lucky? Thank you for choosing me. I cannot wait for life with you to blossom and grow and continue to get better and better!

***

I love you more than I can say. You may not know it, but I think about you all the time. I hope you know in your heart that I am always here for you no matter where your life takes you. I wish I could tell you how I truly feel about some of the things that have gone on in your life in the past few years, but I can't. All I can say is that I miss you and I'm always here for you no matter what. Hopefully you, somewhere inside, still feel the same. I pray for you constantly and hope that everything turns out okay. I try to believe that everything turns out okay in the end, so if it isn't okay yet, it must not be the end. Your family loves you, I love you, and I can only hope you remember how to love yourself, because you are amazing and I feel like I lost you somewhere along the way.

***

You are special. You are worthy. You deserve only the best that life has to offer. Even if no one else believes in you, you should believe in yourself. You have worked hard and you have become talented beyond believe because of your dedication. Don't ever let anyone get you down for too long, because your smile is much to valuable to be hidden. Let others love you. Love yourself. Understand that you will not always be understood. Know that you will not always be appreciated, but that if you appreciate yourself and others, that is what truly matters. Life may not always be easy, but everything you go through is worth it if it helps make you the person you are destined to become.

Nena

Lately our sweet little Daphne had been pretty ill lately. I decided to take some pictures of her in case she may leave us soon. Hazel died so suddenly that I didn't get to say goodbye, so I am trying to spend a lot of extra special time with my Daphne-girl. She is such a sweet little girl!

30 Day Challenge: Day 7

Challenge: Do you read? What are your favorite books?

I have a love/hate relationship with reading. I hate reading in that I was in school for so long and had to do so much reading, that for awhile after I graduated I couldn't even stand the sight of a book. Now that I have been out of school for 4 years, I am starting to really love to read again. The problem I have now is that I have a really hard time finding books that I actually enjoy. I hate fiction, for the most part. I like to feel like after I have finished a book I have either peered into the life of someone I wouldn't have otherwise been able to learn about or that I have a new knowledge of a specific topic. So, biographies, true life stories and business books are usually my pick.

It would be really difficult for me to pick a favorite book of all time, although to be honest it would probably be some children's book I read as a child. Things like The Indian in the Cupboard, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The House on Mango Street, The Bean Trees, Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451, The Glass Menagerie and The Giver. These were all great books that I liked as a kid.

If I had to pick adult book favorites they would include: Blink, Zig-Zagging: Loving Madly, Losing Badly...How Ziggy Saved My Life, Black Ties and Lullabies, A Night Without Armor, Heaven Sent, Same Difference: How Gender Myths Are Hurting our Relationships, Our Children and Our Jobs, The Five Love Languages and The Most Important Year in a Woman's Life: What Every Bride Needs to Know.

30 Day Challenge: Day 6

Challenge: What band or musician is most important to you?

This is such a difficult question. There are so many bands and/or musicians that have had an impact on me over the past 27 years. I guess I would have to go with Ben Folds. It is one of the first concerts Ryan and I ever saw together, I can listen to an entire one of his albums without wanting to skip a song and we chose a song of his for our first dance song. Ben Folds is obviously very popular, so I almost wanted to choose a lesser known band/musician so that I would seem more hip and into the music scene. But, you can't choose who you love, and I love Ben Folds.

Runners up? Barenaked Ladies (before Steve left), Beatles, Billy Joel, Brad Paisley, Cake, Chicago, Collin Raye, Edwin McCain, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Gabe Dixon Band, Hootie and the Blowfish, Jason Mraz, Jason Sweet, Josh Turner, Lady Antebellum, Maroon 5, Matt Wertz, Nicole Nordeman, Parokya Ni Edgar, Queen, Rakin y KenY, Rascal Flatts, Ray Lamontagne, Russell Howard, Sam Hart, Santana, Simon and Garfunkel, Sister Hazel, Stephen Speaks and Usher

Tower Club with Aunt Barb

Aunt Barb was in town from the Yukon Territory in Canada, so we go to take her out to dinner last Thursday. Where to go? Our favorite restaurant in Dallas, Tower Club. We had the best food ever and Barb got to do her favorite thing, go up into a tall, tall building. You see in the Yukon Territory, the tallest building they have is 4 stories. The Tower Club is on the 48th floor of a building in Downtown Dallas, so it was perfect for Barb. Ryan and I each got a three course meal and split desert. I only took pictures of the main course (Steak with Potato Strata, Baby Carrots and Asparagus) and desert (Mango Cake and Sorbet), but they were both amazing!

I love going to Tower Club, especially with my family. They always have amazing service and amazing food. Our waitress from last November even remembered us! We are so lucky that Ryan's job affords us to ability to go to great restaurants as well as to play golf. Ryan and I are so blessed!

30 Day Challenge: Day 5

Challenge: Five places you want to visit

FIJI: an island nation in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,100 nautical miles northeast of New Zealand's North Island. Its closest neighbours are Vanuatu to the west, France's New Caledonia to the southwest, New Zealand's Kermadec to the southeast, Tonga to the east, the Samoas, France's Wallis and Futuna to the northeast and Tuvalu to the north. The majority of Fiji's islands were formed through volcanic activity started around 150 million years ago. The country comprises an archipelago of more than 332 islands.

THE MALDIVES: an island nation in the Indian Ocean formed by a double chain of twenty-six atolls stretching in a north-south direction off India's Lakshadweep islands, between Minicoy Island and Chagos Archipelago. It stands in the Laccadive Sea, about seven hundred kilometers (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and (250 mi) south-west of India.

SOUTH AFRICA: The Republic of South Africa is a parliamentary democracy comprising nine provinces which is located at the southern tip of Africa, with a 2,798 kilometers coastline on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. To the north lie Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an enclave surrounded by South African territory. South Africa is known for a diversity in cultures and languages.

CHINA: With nearly 4,000 years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations.Prior to the 19th century, it possessed one of the most advanced societies and economies in the world; but through successive dynasties it then missed the Industrial Revolution and began to decline. In the 19th and 20th century, imperialism, internal weakness and civil wars damaged the country and its economy, and led to the overthrow of imperial rule.

DISNEY WORLD: The Walt Disney World Resort, sometimes shortened to Walt Disney World or Disney World, is the world's largest and most-visited recreational resort. Located approximately 21 miles southwest of Orlando, Florida, USA, the resort covers an area of 30,080-acre and includes four theme parks, two water parks, 23 on-site themed resort hotels (excluding 8 that are on-site, but not owned by the Walt Disney Company), including a campground, two health spas and physical fitness centers, and other recreational venues and entertainment. It opened on October 1, 1971 with only the Magic Kingdom theme park and has since added Epcot (October 1, 1982), Disney's Hollywood Studios (May 1, 1989) and Disney's Animal Kingdom (April 22, 1998). The resort was inspired by the dreams of Walt Disney and his creation of Disneyland in California. Its original theme park, Magic Kingdom, is designed similarly to Disneyland. Walt Disney created "Disney World" in order to have a vacation resort that was much different from Disneyland's one-day visit; this includes a much wider variety of sports, recreation, uniquely-themed resort hotels and entertainment.
