"Diet" Bust

So, I lived on that 3-day diet for, well, 3 days. I didn't put one bite of food in my mouth that wasn't on that list. I didn't divert from the list, except for I didn't eat cauliflower on the 3rd day. Yuck! Here are some interesting things I learned while on this "diet".

1. Trying to eat a cup of cottage cheese is a lot like the drink a gallon of milk challenge. I thought I was going to be sick.
2. Same goes for trying to eat a cup of cooked tuna. I need the raw stuff, sushi style, or nothing.
3. I really like fresh fruit and am going to try to incorporate more of it into my diet.
4. It is possible for me to live without added sugars.

To call this a diet is pretty lame. Basically it is calorie restrictiveness at it's finest. I am sure that I could have eaten anything that I would have wanted, as long as I kept my daily intake below 1000 calories and still lost the weight.

So, how much weight did I lose? Three pounds. Not 10 pounds, not even the half of that which I was hoping for. Three little pounds which I am sure will come right back the second I eat over 1000 calories.

There were plenty of bad things about this meal plan that I hated.

1. Hot Dogs. Hot dogs have nitrates, at least all of the ones I found did. Nitrates = bad.

2. Dairy. I normally don't have much dairy in my diet. The only dairy I ever really eat is cheese, and even that I eat very sparingly. To have to choke down a cup full of cottage cheese was more like torture than lunch.

3. Bread. Although we only by wheat bread that has no HFCS, I still don't normally eat that much bread. I perhaps eat about 2-3 pieces a week. The problem is that I am a bread addict, so although I am against eating a lot of bread, I really did enjoy it.

4. Ice Cream. I see no need for ice cream to be a part of this meal plan. It is both dairy and sugar, two no nos. Now for me it wasn't as bad because I ate no sugar added, lowfat vanilla ice cream. But for others who follow this diet, it doesn't specify what kind of ice cream other than vanilla. That means that others could be eating full fat, full sugar ice cream. That doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Now for the things that I liked.

1. Fresh Fruit. While I eat an apple every day, it was nice to add in some fruit variety with the cantaloupe. I forgot how much I love cantaloupe!

2. Calorie Restriction. I was actually surprised that I wasn't that hungry on this diet. The only time I ever felt hunger was around 3pm - 4pm in the afternoon each day, but even that went away quickly. This diet reminded me what hunger really feels like and the difference between that feeling and boredom eating.

3. Focus On Veggies. This diet had a low focus on meat, which I am not a big fan of anyway, and a huge focus on veggies. Although I would have preferred a little more veggie variety, aka if I see a carrot again in the next little while I will puke, I enjoyed the veggies. I could probably be a vegetarian or at least pescatarian and live a happy life. (That doesn't mean I am switching, though. I still enjoy chicken and pork, and occasionally turkey. We don't ever buy red meat, but I will eat it at restaurants on occasion.)

Overall, I do not recommend this particular three day meal plan. While it had good elements, it isn't a viable plan for weight loss and the negatives (nitrates, dairy, bread, and refined sugar) outweigh the positives. Take a clue, though, from this plan and pack your day with veggies and fresh fruit, keeping an eye on your calorie intake, and good things should happen.

3 Day Diet

Today I started a three day detox diet. It is rumored to help people lose up to 10 lbs in three days. I would be happy with half that amount. I guess it is supposed to mostly reduce water weight and I'm sure the weight would come back as soon as you begin eating normally on day four, but I decided I could do any diet for 72 hours. Plus, most comments around the web say that people have lost at least 2 pounds and kept it off. I guess you would have to lose at least a little weight based on calorie restriction alone. We'll see what happens.

Day 1
Breakfast: black tea or coffee, 1/2 a grapefruit, 1 piece of toast with 1 Tablespoon of peanut butter.
Lunch: 1/2 cup tuna, 1 piece dry toast, black coffee or tea.
Dinner: 3 ounces lean meat, 1 cup green beans, 1 cup carrots, 1 apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream.

Day 2
Breakfast: 1 egg, 1 slice dry toast, 1/2 banana, black coffee or tea.
Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese and six crackers.
Dinner: two hot dogs, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream.

Day 3
Breakfast: one apple, 1 ounce cheddar cheese, five Saltine brand crackers, black tea or coffee.
Lunch: one hard-boiled egg, one slice dry toast.
Dinner: 1 cup tuna, 1 cup carrots, 1 cup cauliflower, 1 cup melon, and 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream.

I am following every detail of this plan except for the 1 cup of cauliflower on day three's dinner. Of the three foods I hate most in life, cauliflower makes the list. The other two? Tomato and rosemary. At least those don't appear in this diet. Make sure to check back on Thursday and I'll tell you if this worked at all.

Movie Review: The Dark Knight Rises

This movie was absolutely one of the best movies I have ever seen. Having said that, I don't think it quite reached the epic level of The Dark Knight, but it came damn close. If the Dark Knight rises was a 10/10 movie, this was a 9.98/10. This movie had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, it had great characterization, and it had twists I didn't see coming. This is pretty much the trifecta for any great action movie. Also, even though the run time was around two and a half hours, it felt like I was only in the theater for 30 minutes. That is how you know it's a good movie.

I loved the introduction of Catwoman as well. I was hesitant to like Anne Hathway as this sexy superhero, but any fears I had were quickly assuaged when she stepped on screen. She was brilliant. And, as much as I always hate to say it because he is such a jerk in real life, Christian Bale was a good Batman. Also, how can you not love Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Fox? The characterization was simply wonderful. The only reason I didn't like this film as much as The Dark Knight is that, in my opinion, Heath Ledger achieved perfection as the Joker. He was truly one of the best villains of all time.

After Batman Begins, which I wasn't a huge fan of, I would maybe give it a 6/10, I was hesitant to even go and see The Dark Knight for fear it would be more of the same. I can honestly saw that The Dark Knight tops the list of my favorite movies of all time. And now just below it on my list? The Dark Knight Rises. I can't wait to own it on BluRay so I can watch it again and again.

Girls Night: Gloria's

Girls night out last night = Sangria and Mojitos at Gloria's! Caitlyn and I try to go out to dinner at least once per month, although we don't always make it. This month we did and we went to one of our favorite places, Gloria's in Addison. I had the Salvadorian sampler platter which had plantains, yucca, beans, rice, a papusa, and a tamale. All were excellent. Cait kept it simple with been and cheese quesadillas. But it was their dang mojitos that were so good. I could eat at Gloria's every day and it is always great to see Cait. She is heading off to Spain, so we may have to get together sooner than later so that I can hear all about it. Girls night doesn't happen nearly often enough!

Movie Reviews: Brave & Ted

Ryan and I did something we had never done before, we did a little mini movie marathon at Studio Movie Grill. We saw Brave and then Ted. I can tell you we saw these in the right order. Brave was a bit boring and Ted really rounded out the night by being totally hilarious. Anyway, on to the reviews.

Brave was a movie that I was really excited to see. I have always been a Pixar fan. Who hasn't? It seemed like a kick-ass chick kinda movie so I was in. Too bad this movie was all about a queen being turned into a bear by and evil witch and spending the whole movie trying to break the curse so that she didn't turn into a bear forever. Come on Pixar! Where is the originality in that? The movie was trite and boring, and it hinted at the Lion King father/son relationship that bothered me so much about that movie. Anyway, if the movie had turned out to be what the trailers portrayed it as, I would have loved this movie. Mom turns into a bear and daughter must break the curse before mom becomes a bear forever? I hated it. I will not see this movie again and give it a 4 out of 10, just because of the animation quality and a few good jokes.

That brings me to Ted. This movie was freaking awesome! I can't really even begin to explain why. It was raunchy, funny, and over the top. I loved every second of it. Seth MacFarlane can do no wrong though, although I am a bit tired of Family Guy at this point. Anyway, teddy bear that comes alive and is the lifelong friend of its owner, genius. I could watch this movie over and over again, and I probably will. See Ted. Period.

One Happy Nerd

Not much to say other than I am one happy nerd! I just bought "A Fan's Hope" today and it came with  Joss Whedon and Morgan Spurlock action figures. I can't wait to watch the DVD! (PS: Joss and Morgan are now sitting in their place of honor on the media room bookshelves.)

Ryan's 29th Birthday

Yesterday was Ryan's 29th birthday and we had such a fun day! We started out by visiting Taste of Dallas at Fair Park. We ate and drank and had a great time with my parents. We had things like banh mi, which is a Vietnamese sandwich, cinnamon roasted nuts, gelato, and grilled cheese with shredded pork. Everything we had was amazing, but I particularly liked the banh mi, as did Ryan. After a couple hours outside in the heat, we were ready to go home and freshen up.

My parents came over later that afternoon and we got to show them our new home. My Dad had been over a few times to help with a few repairs, so he had seen most of the house, but my Mom hadn't been over since we first looked at the house when it was on the market. We gave them the grand tour and then Ryan made some cocktails for everyone.

Next it was on to Joe's Crab Shack so Ryan could have one of his favorite meals, the BBQ Crab Steam Pot. My Dad had a seafood platter, my mom had a salad, and I had a delicious shrimp trio plate. All of the food was good and the atmosphere wasn't even too bad.

After dinner, it was back to the house where we flipped on the Ranger's game upstairs in the media room and chilled out in the recliners. Then, homemade key lime pie and presents.

I think Ryan got everything he wanted for his birthday and the celebration isn't over yet. Tonight we are heading to Stonebriar Country Club for dinner with Ryan's sister. Can't wait!

Health IT Certification

It's official. I am a student again. How did this happen? I swore that when I walked out of that last class of my Masters program that I was done. For good. But here, just 5 years later, I am again a student.

Yesterday I was officially accepted into a certification program for health related information technology. I am working towards certification as both an Implementation Manager and a Health IT Professional (HIT Pro). I will be taking anywhere from the required 204 CEUs to an additional, optional 544 CEUs. It's a program that is all online, so I can work both on my lunch hour as well as at home. I'm hoping I'm well prepared. At the end of six months I will be taking the HIT Pro exam to become certified. It seems as though one day I will have more letters after my name than in my name itself. What can I say, I am a lifelong student.

Birthdays, Engagement and 4th of July, Oh My!

Yesterday was a busy day, but a fun one! It was my friend Gerald's engagement party, my grandfather and aunt's birthday party, and the 4th of July. Whew! I get tired just thinking about it. Ryan and I started off the morning with a lovely homemade breakfast of Buttermilk Pancakes with a Fresh Peach and Brown Sugar Compote. I have to say that I absolutely love cooking in my new kitchen. It makes everything much more fun when I can spread out and have a little elbow room. And I have to say the results so far have been pretty good. Ryan said that these pancakes were one of the best things I have ever made.

Next up was Gerald and Caity's engagement party held at Gerald's mom's house. It was just a family get together, but Gerald is a lot like family since I have known him for 22 years now. They had a lovely catered BBQ lunch, which was really nice as Caity's parents were in town from New York and BBQ is such a Texas staple. This was my first time meeting Caity, but I knew she would be wonderful because Gerald is a great guy. I am so happy for the two of them!

Aren't they just the sweetest? As you can see, Gerald proposed in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. What a lucky girl! Anyway, the wedding is a couple of years off as they are both working to complete their doctorate degrees, but I am sure the ceremony will be beautiful!

Up next was heading to my parent's house to celebrate my aunt and grandfather's birthdays. We didn't do anything spectacular, but just getting to spend time together was nice. We had Central Market for dinner and I made a from scratch spice cake with cream cheese frosting. No box mixes for this chick and her new amazing kitchen. Everyone agreed it was one of the best cakes they had ever eaten. I know it was true, because my family is a pretty honest bunch.  I was pretty proud of it to say the least. (I will be posting the recipe and pictures soon, so stay tuned.)

The only sad part of the whole day is that my parents neighbor's house caught on fire, no not from fireworks, and was destroyed. Luckily they weren't home at the time, but they had 4 dogs and 1 cat in the home and only 1 dog was rescued. The rest are still missing. They think the animals escaped when the firefighters had to kick down the door to fight the blaze. I'm praying they find those precious animals soon!

On our way home for the night, Ryan and I were able to catch multiple fireworks shows on our drive. We then made it back to our neighborhood park where we had a great seat for the tail end of a local fireworks display. This is one forth of July I won't soon forget!
